Simple Steps in Pressure Gauge Calibration
By edword55
As is true with any other measuring tools, a pressure gauge has its tendencies to wear overtime resulting to inaccurate measurements. A prolonged use of this tool is usually the cause of wear resulting to inaccurate and inconsistent readings. To ensure an accurate and consistent reading, a pressure gauge calibration can be a solution rather than buying a new one. In this article, we have gathered a few tips on how you can do your own pressure gauge calibration by doing some simple and easy to follow steps.

A few items that you might need before you start doing your own pressure gauge calibration:
- Pressure Gauge with inaccurate readings
- Pressure Gauge with accurate readings
- Pen and Paper
Steps in Pressure Gauge Calibration
The items enumerated above are what we need before you begin doing your own calibration. Most pressure gauge designs that can be calibrated using an adjustment dial. If your pressure gauge has this feature, then do the following steps when calibrating:
- Using the pressure gauge in question, do a series of measurements and take note of the readings. About ten different readings should be enough for your samples. You will need the readings again later.
- This time, using the pressure gauge that has an accurate reading, do the same number of measurements as you did with the pressure gauge in question and cross-check the readings of both pressure gauges.
- Using the readings of both pressure gauges, you may then start your calibration by comparing the readings of both gauges and getting the differences of each paired readings. Access the dial for the pressure gauge to be calibrated and make the adjustments as necessary.
- The final step is to make sure that the pressure gauge in question now has an accurate reading by doing steps 1 and 2 and then compare the results and do some more adjustments using the adjustment dial until both pressure gauges have the same readings.
If your pressure gauge does not have a dial for adjustments, then using a little math should do the trick when doing your pressure gauge calibration. You calibrate your pressure gauge that does not have an adjustment dial by following these simple steps:
- Using the pressure gauge in question, do a series of measurements and take note of the readings. About ten different readings should be enough for your samples. You will need the readings again later.
- This time, using the pressure gauge that has an accurate reading, do the same number of measurements as you did with the pressure gauge in question and cross-check the readings of both pressure gauges.
- Using the notes that you have gathered, check the differences in the readings for both gauges. If you do a little math, the differences in reading should be consistent in all your sample readings. For example, the first sample pair of data for Pressure gauge in question versus the pressure gauge with an accurate reading has a 3 psi difference. When using the newly calibrated pressure gauge, you should now subtract -3 psi in every measurement that you make.
The steps mentioned above should be able to let you do your own pressure gauge calibration easily. Instead of replacing your pressure gauge which is costly, you can save a lot if you do your own pressure gauge calibration at home or in your workplace.
